Simple web marketing guide 1

Google works on the relevancy of the word searched for and the content on your site. It appears to have moved away from using the keywords meta tag as a way of ranking sites, and there is a popular thought that they are no longer necessary for Google, but other search engines do use them. Instead Googles algorithm looks at the content of the site and takes into account word density, word flow, and amount of code. It also seems to like fresh content, not duplicate content. So try and vary the descriptions of your items if you are selling online.

Linking also determines relevancy and rankings. Google's algorithm will also search to see what other sites are linking to yours. This simply means to Google that if plenty of sites are linking to yours it's a clear indication that you are offering relevant content on your site with regards to the term being searched for.

The fact that links were being used to increase a websites position resulted in the creation of "reciprocal linking" but of course Google has refined the results once again and gives a lower score now to reciprocal links, and looks instead at the type of links being traded. Simply put if you sell shoes and you are linked to a butcher and vise-versa then google will mark that link lower. However if you were linked to a shoe care site then Google will see that as more relevant. It also appears that Google will give high value to links which are inbound only, which means someone is linking to your site and you are not linking to them.

So bottom line...

  • Write lots of content,
  • Start a blog on your site or other sites and link to yours,
  • Pull in your twitter feeds or other social bookmarking sites you use.
  • Keep the content fresh.
  • Try writing an article every day or once a week, Google will like that.
  • Get sites to link to yours.
  • Describe your image.

Try using Press Releases to promote your site/content they are inexpensive or even free here are a few. Free Press Release, PRLog, OpenPR, PR.com, I-newswire

It may also be prudent to look at Google's own guidelines.
